On the edge of Wieliczka, famous for its UNESCO-listed salt mine, stands the Reformed Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Stigmata of Saint Francis (Kościół Stygmatów świętego Franciszka). The miraculous image of the Madonna and Child is venerated there.
The monastery church features the painting of Our Lady of Grace painted on the stone plate. It most likely dates back to the middle of the 16th century in Italy and arrived in Wieliczka together with salt merchants. It was first placed in a roadside shrine, on the site of which the monastery church was later erected. It is believed that thanks to the intercession of Our Lady of Grace the town of Wieliczka was saved from destruction by the forceful influx of water from the salt mine in 1992. In 1995 the painting was ornamented with the papal crowns consecrated by Pope John Paul II. The church festivals fall on August 2 (the feast day of Our Lady of the Angels) and on October 4 (the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi).
