Fossils of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (Polish Jura)

Skamieniałości

Consisting of a few thousand exhibits, the collection of minerals of Olkusz Land and fossils from the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland displays the wealth of the lands of Olkusz hidden under its surface.

The hallmark of Jura, limestones from its surface, are also on display.

They emerged about 150 million years ago when the area was under water. At that time, calcareous skeletons of marine organisms were deposited at the bottom of a warm shallow sea and, with time, calcareous sedimentary rocks were formed out of the deposits.

The display cabinets contain organisms that lived in the area millions of years ago. Visitors can see fossilised sponges, belemnites, bivalves, sea urchins and fragments of invertebrates.

The largest ammonites are half a metre in diameter.

Against the wall, beautiful specimens of conglomerate excavated in the Parcze district are displayed on pedestals. This rock is sometimes called ‘żarnowiec’ because it was commonly used in the past in the production of ‘żarna’ or quern-stones because of its texture. Their Jurassic origin is evidenced by the preserved imprints of Jurassic fossils.
